Hey guys here's what I have done so far. Sorry for not posting regularly. I will be leaving for Hawaii tomorrow for about a week. I'll make sure to keep in touch with you guys.
Aaron, Luis and I met today and we came up with some things we think you can do to improve you pieces. For the hero's portrait the forms arn't reading. The face looks too flat, look are some of the planes on your male reference's face. Refine the edges of his clothes and use textures in your file for believably and and material variation. As you progress on the full figure render desaturate the background colors. Then maybe form the other side there is a soft warm light to add form on the side opposite the green light. Does your characters outfit have patterns? For the gun: It feels too generic. Maybe the gun has some engravings in the metal part or butt of the gun? Was it a officers fancy gun? Or did he carve into it? How does your gun connect with your character? Is the ax part worn and dirt in some places or nicely polished? We felt that the weapon needed more story.
You can try looking up images of some of nathan fowkes' portraits. By looking at those, it might help you with your portrait. The hat is looking better from the previous post though.
I like where your character render is going, but I kinda feel that you can probably crop in more? so that we see more of the character and less of the environment. Including the warm light like Kim said would be nice as well.
For the weapon, I'm wondering if it would be enough to take down the bloody mary monster? The monster will mainly be using fire, smoke, ash and will be attacking from the air, so how can the hero defend himself from it? Maybe he can attach stuff to his weapon to make it more powerful? or maybe there is magic involved? It just needs to be shown/explained visually, so that we know that this guy is can fend for himself :P
I like the girl in the center. She seems like the type that would be kidnapped...haha..
